14/09/2021 - European Mobility Week 2021 (Facebook Município do Porto Santo)
MOVE SUSTAINABLE. BE HEALTHY – European Mobility Week 2021
“Move in a Sustainable Way. Be Healthy”, was the theme chosen for this year's European Mobility Week, which is part of the celebration of the European Car Free Day on 22 September.
The Municipality of Porto Santo joined Europe Direct Madeira, offering the possibility for the local community to participate, on September 18th, in a series of initiatives such as an information session/debate on mobility, bicycle circuits, walking, running and there is also a bicycle competition for children aged between 6 and 12 years.
At a local level, we have the support of the Ginásio Clube Porto Santo, for the 18th, and those interested in participating in the activities can register, free of charge, through the link available here.
On September 22, the European Car Free Day will be celebrated by restricting traffic on Estrada Regional 120, from the Pastelaria “A Pérola” to the old Fábrica das Águas, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Here you can only use public transport, bicycles, electric vehicles or any other means of transport as long as it is not combustion-powered.
This initiative aims to raise awareness of the promotion of more sustainable mobility solutions and highlight the benefits of more ecological means of transport. It makes us reflect on the economic advantages that result from more sustainable uses of transport such as walking, cycling, public transport and using less polluting vehicles.
In addition to the health benefits of keeping us more active, choosing sustainable transport reduces oil imports and improves air quality within cities.
This year, to date, 45 countries and 2283 cities have been involved, of which 68 are Portuguese, including Porto Santo, a pioneer in terms of RAM in 2007, when it joined this initiative.
This is an opportunity for cities to present their urban centers in a different way by restricting motorized traffic, encouraging the use of more sustainable transport and raising awareness of the importance that each person's choices have on the environment and also on health.
