Literary Garden
Rehabilitated following a partnership between the Development Society of Porto Santo and the City Council, the new “Literary Garden” is already ready to welcome locals and tourists who want to enjoy an outdoor space for rest or, simply, to read a book.
But if the book stayed at home, don't worry! There are more than a hundred copies of different literary genres in the reading booth, requested by the Porto Santo City Council to the Altice Foundation, within the scope of the national project for the rehabilitation of old telephone booths.
A strategy to promote reading in different age groups, with the enhancement of green spaces in the city, in a playful-pedagogical aspect, and which is part of the activity plan of the Municipal Library of Porto Santo, responsible for the management of the Cabin.
The collection and delivery of the books is the responsibility of each person, being an exercise in citizenship, therefore requiring values such as collaboration, respect, trust and responsibility, which are indispensable for the success of the initiative.
In addition to books and the landscape, you can also contemplate some quotes from works by José Saramago, in a kind of homage to the first Portuguese-speaking writer, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, which celebrates its centenary next year.
With summer on the doorstep, the Municipal Library is also preparing for the implementation of a series of activities to be developed in the “Literary Garden” within the scope of the “Readings with a taste of the sea”, aimed at different age groups.
The booth of the new reading garden was inaugurated on May 20, with the presence of the Regional Secretary for Economics, Rui Barreto, the Mayor, Idalino Vasconcelos, the Commercial Director of Altice, Jorge Sequeira and also counted on the virtual presence, of a representative of the Altice Foundation.
