22/07/2021 - Waste collection campaign "Há Mar e Mar há ir e Limpar" (Facebook Município do Porto Santo)
On the 21st of July, on the Blue Flag beaches of the island of Porto Santo, namely Fontinha, Ribeiro Salgado and Cabeço da Ponta, the waste collection campaign "Há Mar e Mar há ir e Limpar" took place. This is an initiative of the Regional Directorate for Environment and Climate Change, the Regional Secretariat for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change under the MaRam Strategy.
The hotels responsible for the Blue Flag award, Hotel Vila Baleira (Cabeço da Ponta) and Hotel Pestana Porto Santo (Ribeiro Salgado) envolved their tourists in this initiative, as well as the Porto Santo City Council, which associated itself with users of the “Porto Santo Vacations” of Sporting Clube of Porto Santo.
In total 79 participants were involved, having collected about 23 kg of garbage, of which plastic stands out.
This initiative was also associated with the “Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho” project co-financed by the EEA Grants Portugal Environment Program, promoted by WWF Portugal, in partnership with AIDGLOBAL, ARM - Águas e Residuos da Madeira, SA, the Municipality of Porto Santo and the Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation (MARE-Arditi).
The “Porto Santo Without Marine Waste” project started on September 1, 2020, being a pioneering project in Portugal that wants to make Porto Santo an island more aware of the use of plastic and contribute to the differentiation and enhancement of this territory. The different national and local partners will work together to identify the flow and discharge of plastic waste, while promoting the optimization of its management and sensitizing the local population and tourists to the problems caused by plastic waste in the oceans.
