The Municipality of Porto Santo celebrated the National Maritime Day, involving the community in several actions to clean up the coast and also one of the main water lines on the island, the cochino stream, unfortunately the target of pollution.
Between 15 and 19 November, 4 beach cleaning campaigns were carried out, aimed at students from schools in Porto Santo, which took place between the bathing area of Ribeiro Salgado and Fontinha and involved 114 students and teachers, who collected a total of 63.4 kg of garbage, taken mainly from the dune area, including butts, plastics, construction materials, batteries, among others.
In an initiative that involved several local entities, PSP, GNR, Air Force and the Porto Santo Security Detachment, also extended to the community in general, two points of the Cochino stream were cleaned, which involved 31 volunteers who collected 380 kg of waste. This location was chosen as a way to sensitize the community to the importance of cleaning the streams to prevent coastal and marine pollution.
These campaigns were part of the Porto Santo Sem Lixo Marinho project and the European Week for Waste Prevention.
