02/11/2021 - ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF PORTO SANTO ISLAND (Facebook Município do Porto Santo)
The island of Porto Santo celebrated its 603rd anniversary, in an event that took place on 1 November, a day that for many years has been marked on the island as the day of its discovery.
A ceremony that featured the raising of the flag, carried out by health professionals, namely a nurse, a firefighter and a civil protection member, for the important role they played during the last times of the pandemic.
A wreath of flowers was also placed next to the Monument to the Discoveries.
Emanuel Nóbrega, representative of the former Rotary Club in Porto Santo, was the speaker at the solemn session, where he spoke about the various events and projects that this association has developed, while active, in Porto Santo.
The Mayor, Nuno Batista, in his speech, congratulated the island on its anniversary, stating that ''after so many years, we continue to believe in Porto Santo's potential, in the intrinsic value of its people, in its identity and cultural''. Nuno Batista, also thanked the presence of the Governor of the Rotary Club of Portugal at District level, Governor Paulo Martins and congratulated the Folklore Group, which on this day also celebrated its anniversary.
The event continued with the celebration of a mass at the Igreja Matriz, followed by a performance by the local Folklore Group and the planting of trees, already in Pico do Castelo, thus marking this anniversary day for the island of Porto Santo.
