MUNICIPALITY OF PORTO SANTO DEVELOPS WORKSHOP ON ETHNOBOTANICS WITH THE SENIOR UNIVERSITY OF PORTO SANTO

Under the Environmental Education Program for Sustainability, under the responsibility of the Municipality of Porto Santo, the students of the Senior University were able to learn a little more about the local plants and, at the same time, contribute with their knowledge to the enrichment of all participants.

The exhibition, prepared and presented by the anthropologist Alexandra Pereira, focused on the theme: «Ethnobotany», with the participation of about 20 students who shared experiences of the past, with regard to the use of plants. Traditions that have reached our days, where plants are used for teas and infusions, to cure various ailments. With regard to cooking, they shared recipes that come from a long time ago, but which are still their favorites today. The exchange of experiences made the initiative very interesting and lively.

This activity was duly framed within the scope of the classification of the island of Porto Santo as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where endemic plants, which are part of the natural heritage, are of great importance.
